Angel Casts provides memory making and bereavement support to parents and whanau during their time of loss. Our service has both a tangible and emotional view of memory making through grief.
The tangible side is where our volunteers meet with families at their home, funeral home, or hospital setting, to take moulds of their child's hands and feet, which are then made into stone casts. These are exact 3D replicas and capture fine details down to skin texture and fingerprints. Preserving the physical likeness of a baby or child gives parents a tangible keepsake to put their hands on, recognise their size and skin texture, providing comfort and opening discussions in the home to remember their child.
The emotional aspect of our memory-making service encourages families to actively parent their child after they've passed away. This includes helping parents to bathe and dress their baby, encouraging them to hold and touch them, and make choices around their clothing, wraps, caskets and Manaaki Mats we provide. Additionally, we organise volunteers to create and distribute essential items like premature clothing, nappies, booties, handmade caskets and pēpi-pod's to offer practical support for parents in those first few days. This allows grieving parents to lay their child to rest with dignity, in a respectful and culturally appropriate manner.
Active parenting is crucial for parents to process their grief and connect with their baby. When a baby is stillborn, the time they have together is so short, usually days, sometimes just hours. Our role is to encourage and assist parents to be involved in the care of their baby and create lasting memories, which will help them manage and process their grief in a healthy way.
